Jamaica: Tart, Vibrant, Naturally Refreshing
The dried hibiscus flower behind Mexico’s favorite agua fresca.
VIBRANT COLOR, BOLD TANG
Jamaica, the Flower Behind a Classic Agua Fresca
Jamaica—dried hibiscus flowers—delivers a deep ruby color and a tart, cranberry-like flavor that’s the base of one of Mexico’s most beloved beverages: agua de jamaica. Beyond drinks, it’s also steeped for tea or used in syrups and reductions. At Latin Specialties, we source jamaica for consistent color and tang, case after case.
Tart, vibrant, and naturally refreshing—jamaica is a glass of color and flavor.
Agua de Jamaica,Ruby Red Tradition
Steep, sweeten, chill: Mexico's most beloved agua fresca.
Traditional drink recipe
Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus Agua Fresca)
Tart, floral and the color of rubies: dried hibiscus flowers steeped, sweetened and served ice cold.
Ingredients
- 1 cup (about 1 ½ oz) dried Latin Specialties Hibiscus flowers (jamaica)
- 8 cups water
- 3/4 cup sugar, to taste
- 1 Mexican Latin Specialties Cinnamon stick (optional)
- Ice, to serve
- Latin Specialties Limes, to garnish
Method
- Rinse the hibiscus flowers under cold water.
- Bring 4 cups of the water (and the cinnamon stick, if using) to a boil. Add the flowers, turn off the heat, cover and steep for 20 minutes.
- Strain into a pitcher, pressing the flowers to extract all the color. Stir in the sugar while the infusion is still warm until dissolved.
- Add the remaining 4 cups of cold water, chill, and serve over ice with a wedge of lime.
TipSteep off the heat instead of boiling the flowers for a long time: it keeps the flavor bright and floral instead of bitter.
